The very youngest patients at a Concord hospital have been receiving donated breastmilk. Premature babies and babies with birth complications have been given the best start in life even though their own mothers have been unable to produce milk.
Jan Greer-Carney, the hospital’s director of nutrition said that the programme had been very well received. She added that human breast milk provides nutrients and immunological benefits that are not available in formula feed and that the initiative represents the best possible standard of care for such infants.
The donor milk comes from the Boston Mother’s Milk Bank. Mothers with supplies surplus to their families needs donate to the bank. These mothers must be in good health and undergo medical screening prior to donation. The milk is then pasteurized and frozen until required.
I liked this story. Would you be happy to donate breastmilk? How would you feel about your baby receiving donated human milk? Let me know!
