Flu Warning for Pregnant Women

protect unborn from fluNew research suggests that if  mothers contract the flu virus during their pregnancies, especially during the third trimester, it may have a permanent effect on their children’s brain development.  Thanks guys, as if pregnant women can’t think of enough things to worry about!

The findings are based upon studies led by UW-Madison’s Christopher Coe, professor of pychology.  The research centred upon twelve pregnant macaques all carrying an influenza virus.  These macaques and their babies were studied alongside a control group of seven uninfected macaques.  Using MRI scans, researchers detected significant differences between the offspring of the study group and the offspring of the control group.  The babies of infected mothers had up to seven percent  less cell development in the cerebral cortex than in the uninfected group.

The researchers point out that because these differences have persisted into the first year of an infant’s life it could mean that the effects are permanent.  It is thought these differences in development are caused by the mother’s anti-inflammatory responses, which are particularly strong in the third trimester.  There is also evidence that these responses may have repercussions for other developmental issues and result in an increased risk of autism, of schizophrenia and possibly other pyschiatric disorders.

Should pregnant women worry about this? (You know how we love a good worry!)  No, but they should take sensible precautions.  Despite my best efforts I’ve never managed to score a summer baby, the sensible advice is if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant during the flu season you should get vaccinated.
