As Safe as Sleeping Babies?

As safe as sleeping babies?Have you been horrified by the number of baby product recalls lately?  The Dorel crib recall was especially upsetting involving as it did a fatality.  It sends a shiver down the spine of every parent.  Sadly we cannot undo tragedies we can only make sure that they don’t happen again.  Yet the saga continues as another stroller is added to the list of recent recalls.  Around 1200 Cybex strollers sold throughout the US and Canada are being recalled for alterations after and infant fractured his finger on a hinge, it could have been much worse.

The recall involves the Ruby, Onyx and Topaz models of Cybex umbrella strollers.  They were sold between between August 2009 and November 2009. As always, for further details if you have concerns go to CPSC.

Recalls are not all that have been keeping parents awake at night.  This month I’ve been following the latest stories concerning BPA or Bisphenol A as it is also known.  Now this is the stuff of nightmares.  It is an oestrogen mimicker capable of making snails explode through over production of eggs.   What is it doing to our endocrine systems?    BPA is a chemical widely used in plastic products from CDs, the lining of canned goods, to baby bottles.  Savvy moms have been avoiding products containing BPA for some time now, but the FDA has not always taken their line.  Until now that is.

It has been claimed that the FDA is in thrall to the powerful chemical corporations.  The public stance was that BPA was safe for all uses.  This month however, the FDA has done an about turn and admitted there were concerns over the use of BPA.  Concerns centre around its effects on the brains, behavior and prostate glands of fetuses, infants and young children.

We need to know more about BPA and we need to ban it from baby products until we are absolutely certain of its effects.  Some states have already moved to ban BPA, Wisconsin would join Canada, Minnesota, Connecticut, Chicago and three counties in New York in banning BPA in baby bottles.

Useful Link here for FDA to get the latest on this.  Didn’t want to upset you, sweet dreams folks!
